The population of christians in Korea is reported to assume about one fourth of that of Korea in the 1980s. However, the Korean society during the period was so corrupt, tyrannic and unjust that there were few Christians who tried to hold God`s justice in their society. In 1992, the Christian Ethic Movement and the Institute of Korean Christian History conducted a survey of their political culture in order to find out the reasons. This paper is a report of the survey and the discussion of the results. The survey found out that the Korean Christian had a "double standard" which separated their actual lives from their religious lives. The "political cynicism" was also found, in which the Korean Christian retreated form political action. Such cultural traits as "double standard" and "political cynicism" led the Korean Christians to a "conservatism with criticism" which had hardly contributed to the democratization and the justice of the Korean society. This paper emphasizes the role of the Christian leaders and recommends their reeducation for the new political culture to complete their mandate in the Korean society. |
