According to Reformed perspective, Genesis 1:28 has been interpreted as a cultural mandate. This understanding, however, needs a critical evaluation. I think it cannot be interpreted as cultural mandate, rather as God’s covenant regarding the Kingdom of God. Genesis 1:28 consists of three elements of kingdom: multiplying descendents, conquering the land, and dominion. These are manifested through the same formula with the Abrahamic covenant. It follows that the elements consist of one nation. In its unfolding, these point forward to the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ. What I am proposing in my paper is that Genesis 1:28 is so important and key verse to understand the whole Old Testament and New Testament cross-canonically, which has not been given much attention.
Recently, however, a covenantal reading of Genesis 1:28 as a key to unlock the structural coherence of the whole Bible have been proposed by a Korean scholar, Yong-Ki Park (1997, The Bible Theology), and western scholars, like, Greg Beale (2012, A New Testament Biblical Theology), and Peter J. Gentry & Stephen J. Wellum (2012, Kingdom through Covenant), among others. If this verse can be interpreted as the prototype of the Abrahamic covenant, this means that Genesis 1:28 can be a key argument for the covenantal coherence through the kingdom motif. If this argument has biblical or exegetical validity, it will certainly offer us a fresh perspective for overcoming human salvation- oriented worldview.
