이 글은 ‘그리스도인 학자’의 정의로 세 가지를 제안한다. 첫째, 그리스도인이고 학자인 사람, 둘째 그리스도인이면서 그리스도인답게 학문을 하는 사람, 셋째 ‘기독교 학문’을 하는 사람. 이 가운데 두 번째 정의가 현실적으로 가장 합당한 정의라는 주장을 펼친 다음, 이 글의 주요 관심사인 두 공동체, 곧 신앙의 공동체인 교회와 학문 공동체인 대학이나 연구소에 이중적으로 소속된 것이 그리스도인 학자에게 어떤 문제를 낳는지를 공동체 구성 조건들을 통해서 논의한다. 여기서 관심을 둔 것은 신앙 공동체와 학문 공동체의 제도적 측면보다는 이 두 공동체에서 학문을 하고 신앙생활을 하는 사람, 곧 학자와 신자의 마음이다. 마음에 관심을 둘 때, 두 공동체 사이의 접점과 갈등의 지점이 등장한다는 것이 이 글이 주장하는 주요 논제 가운데 하나이다. 결론 부분에서는 그리스도인이 학자로 산다는 것은 그리스도의 죽음과 부활에 참여해서 온 세상을 회복하는 그리스도의 사역에 동참하는 삶을 사는 것으로 규정한다. |

This paper, read as a keynote address at the 2013 Korea Association for Christian Scholarship Annual Conference held at Kyungbook National University on May 11, 2013, raises a question concerning the dual membership of Christian scholars, sharing their life between the community of faith and academia. After trying to obtain a proper definition of Christian scholar as a scholar who does his or her scholarly works as a Christian, viz, a person who dies with Christ and is raised with Him and follows Him, this paper tries to identify the place where two communities converge each other as well as diverge from each other. The communities, namely the community of faith and community of scholarship, viz., academia, have many convergent points, when they are seen from the perspective of divine creation. They have divergent points when they were seen from the perspective of redemption. The essential thesis of this paper lies in a claim that divergent point could be found in scholar's heart, the orientation point of doing scholarship as well as of living the life of faith. |
