This paper aims to trace the lives of two characters in Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, Jean Valjean and Jabert, on the basis of two Christian themes, ‘grace’ and ‘law,’ seeking to examine how these two concepts are applicable to human salvation, the main themes of Christianity, and the significance they have in the lives of the novel’s main characters.
In the dialectical structure, composed of the original grace, the law, and the grace of Jesus Christ, a reader can find three main characters; Father Myriel signifying ‘the original grace of God,’ inspector Jabert, who may be regarded as a man of the law, and Jean Valjean as a man of grace.
The novel Les Misérables was written during one of the most turbulent times in French history as France was dealing with diverse ways of lives of the people within it. It also describes a revolution that pursues a just society of equality, where the poor can get along
with the rich. On the other hand, the grand historical narrative may help the reader consider the true significance of human salvation.
In brief, this novel persuasively maintains that the success of a revolution that changes a society stems neither from the field of barricade, where people fight violence with bigger violence, nor from the law, which regulates people’s lives in only a very rigid sense. Then, in the light of Jean Valjean’s life, the novel allegorically contends that the real success in a revolution stems from the love and grace of God and Jesus Christ that are open wide toward human beings and the humility of a person who understands and obediently accepts them to change his own life, which is also a true starting point of salvation.
