| 영문 초록 | This paper is considered pictures relating to christianity of William Elliot Griffis's historical materials in terms of korean christianity. He is widely known as the author of 『Corea, Hermit Nation』(1882). He wrote a large number of articles related to Korea as well as this book which was a guide book of Korea to westerners at that time. For this he collected materials on Korea passionately and meticulously. The materials he collected were donated to Rutgers University Library, The State University of New Jersey. And the materials have been named as the Griffis Collection. In this paper, the pictures taking Korean christian School, missionary activity and Believers of Griffis Collection are first reported to academic world. Therefore, the pictures will be a major role of visual materials to reconstructing Korean christian history 100 years ago. These are divided to pictures taken in Chaeryoung, Hwanghae Province, in jeonju, North Jeolla Province, medical missionary work for background. The each picture taken in Chaeryoung, Hwanghae Province and in jeonju, North Jeolla Province is related to North and South presbyterian church in American, which can help research about a korean missionary of American presbyterian church at the time. Especially, photos in Chaeryoung, Hwanghae Province background showed how women's bible study was actively operating. Photos related to medical mission were mostly hospitals founded by Rosetta Hall, in Pyongyang. These pictures are materials to study medical missions as well as Korean medical history. |
