영문 초록 Christian education in Korea, which has served th pioneering role in paving the roads for modern education, is facing danger in the present rather than achieving and fulfilling its original goals. The main purpose of Christian education is to teach students to formulate Christ-like identities and to discover and develop their natural God-given talents so that they may glorify God and serve their neighbors. This process is called the training for the redemptive mature Christian personality. The ultimate goal of Christian education, therefore, is to glorify God, and the purpose is to nurture students to perfect their behaviors and personalities to resemble those of Christ. The present realities of Christian education in Korea can be diagnosed in the following ways. First, there is the loss of ideology. Due to the continued secularization, which has become the social norm, the results of secularization are felt even within the Christian settings. The fact that utilitarianism, one of the leading secular ideological foundation, occupies a prominent position in Christian education is an example. In addition, postmodern tendencies are also good examples. The diffusion of postmodernism in Korea occurred throughout the decades of 1980 and 1990, and manifested itself in Christianity as the religious pluralism. Second, there is the destruction of teaching fields. All fields of education, including home education, church education, school education, and social education, are being ravaged despite the concerns of many educators and parents. Discussions for the future of education, in seeking new alternatives, are arising throughout the country. Third, there is the confusion of future directions. The problems in the philosophical foundations of modern Christian education, especially those of theological concerns, have profound effects on the realities of Christian education. The ever-growing effects of capitalistic consumerism and popular culture on Christian education, to the point of converting all things into materials, must also be recognized as the grave concerns for Christian education. Let us then examine the principles of Christian education we are ultimately seeking. The relationship between the Bible and Christian education is of the foremost importance. The purpose and the contents of Christian education must have its foundation in the bible, and therefore the authority of the Bible must be the fundamental prerequisite for Christian education. The Bible offers a number of principles for educating the children of promise: First, the responsibility of educating the children is st the hands of the parents; Second, one must lead a life to glorify God; and Third, pedagogical methods must be appropriate for the each child. In order to achieve such a Christian education, there must be a systematic organization and ordering of the philosophy of Christian education. It must have the biblical framework, in which to interpret all things. How, then, and with what alternatives, can we cope with the present realities of Christian education? First, we must firmly establish a Christian worldview. In seeking a Biblical worldview, an attempt must be made to withdraw the secular worldview from Christian education. Second, a comprehensive education must be practiced. An attempt must be made to practice God-centered education in the home, school, society, and Church. Third, we must invest in the nurturing of Christian teaching staff. In order to instill a sense of mission and to enable the teachers to properly teach the children, a significant investment must be made. Despite the present dismal realities of Christian education, which is endangered by an amalgam of differing philosophies and secular thoughts, there is a hope for the future. We must strive, in unity, to establish God-centered Christian education in Korea.
