Recently appearing reflection on the modernity, so called, necessity of understanding religious imagination has gained the power. So we should revive aesthetic susceptibility to sacred value that lives as the infinite possibility in our inner life through appreciation of writers and their works that realize the religious imagination. Religious imagination is realized in two aspects. The one originated from eager to transcendental existence surpassing human cognitive and sensible ability, the other is connected with human earthly desire as a secular existence. These religious imagination, for example, the pursuit immortality, the will to revive divinity in secular world, the will of transcendency, the careful sense to spirituality and the pursuit of it, realization of love, etc. are main subject of research. Therefore through these pursuit and consideration of religious imagination, we could restore the otherness of rationality which is alienated in the process of the modern age. Here, we will search the perfection of religious imagination which totally realizes the meeting point with human nature, while we search the origin of the universe by studying Ko Jin-ha, the poet and Lee Seung-woo, the novelist who are outstanding writers in the 1990s. Ko Jin-ha shows us the desire for origin and discovery of divinity and Lee Seung-woo tells us the integration of divinity and reason. These are good examples of religious imagination. Religion keeps away from human desire and seeks after the transcendental and ultimate reality while literature stresses the human pattern of emotion and deals with specific experiences. Consequently, the two part`s structural sameness notwithstanding, they have different inner logics that can not be combinated. Nevertheless the difference paradoxically suggests the explosive power when the two aspects are met with each other. So we are sure that literature should not represent the religious dogma and overlook its essential nature. |
