Handong University has established its reputation among other universities and Christian churches in Korea in a relatively short period of time, successfully maintaining its pure Christian identity since the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the possibility of Handong University as a genuine Christian college by fully integrating faith and learning and by battling against its secularization. To do this, three factors necessary for making a Christian college are being reviewed including the Christian vision of the university, Christian ethos embedded in various systems, and people who will realize the vision and ethos into teaching and research. In addition, there are three additional yet significant factors in the Korean situation that must be recognized and dealt with. These include maintaining a high academic excellence and competitiveness, taking into consideration the financial feasibility of a good education as well as the curriculum. Like most other Christian colleges, Handong University`s Christian vision is not yet in its fully developed, nor refined state; however, the members` commitment and passion have created a new Christian college culture in Korea and have changed the innately secular system into a more Christian one. It is important to note the substantial efforts that are being made to integrate faith and learning which is being increasingly emphasized among professors as well as students. |
