The following research explores the impact of John Amos Comenius and his theory on education on contemporary Christian education by evaluating it through the lens of Reformed theology. To this end, it first investigates his theory on education and proceeds to evaluate it from that of Calvin and the followers of New Calvinism.
Conclusions that can be drawn from examining Comenius' theory on education include the purpose of education, that all are called by God to learn thoroughly about everything within God's creation. All are especially called to learn about the truth so that they are able to glorify God in not only this life but the next. A comprehensive look at the content of education reveals that one needs to be instructed in the areas of creation, the human, and the kingdom of God. Therefore, an integrative and complex methodology on education is suggested, one that analyzes, synthesizes and compares such concentric theory on nature and sense.
When one evaluates Comenius' theory on education against that of Calvin and other Reform theologians, it can be discovered that the purpose of Calvin's theory on education focuses on all being instructed in the ways of faith so that they are led to a confession of faith, salvation, and true sanctification, glorifying God in all they do. When one compares such theory with that of Comenius, who asserted that all are called to glorify God through instruction, it is apparent that both agree on the glorifcation of God as being the end-goal of all education. However, it must be noted that Calvin's undertanding on the purpose of education at once focuses on the instruction of theology for the congregation within the church while the subject of Comenius' theory is education for all of the creation. Therefore, Comenius' comprehensive purpose of education falls more in line with the New Calvinists of the 20th century.
The content of Comenius' understanding of education can be said to be a holistic and complex approach to spirituality, virtue, and intellect. This content reflects a reformist worldview that covers all aspects of the created world as Calvin's understanding of education also included spirituality, virtue, and intellect, one that did not neglect all aspects of creation as well as those of the spiritual world. The new Calvinists are also similar in that their education seeks to encompass all aspects and cultures of the created world in accordance with the Christian worldview. The difference between them may be that Comenius had a deep interest in the created world while the reformist New Calvinists had a deeper interest in culture.
What Comenius has suggested in terms of the method of education include those of the natural and sensory, concentric, analytic, synthetic, and comparative. Calvin, on the other hand, focused on the methods of the spiral, three-dimensional, and the iterative, aiming at a complete learning experience. The concentric method of Comenius and the spiral method of Calvin can be understood in the same context. However, Comenius' teaching method was more developed in that it was more natural and psychological that can align more effective with modern education. Twentieth-century reformist educators also regarded the teaching methods that match the principles of nature that Comenius discussed as the principle of creation. Therefore, it must be concluded that the methods of education and psychology as outlined by Comenius' theory are in tune with that of Calvin as well as the New Calvinists.
Even in the midst of the 4th Industrial Revolution, which is predicted to undergo rapid changes, once one clarifies one's purpose in life as well as the purpose of education through the lens of Reformist worldview, one will be able to acquire a holistic understanding of a biblical worldview in all aspects of education. As the Cultural Mandate is still valid in the age of change, all aspects of the created world must be present in the content of education. Spiral, stereoscopic, and perfect learning methods are useful in that they can lead one to understand the core of the Gospel even before the present epochal change.
