이 논문은 사도행전 12장에 등장하는 아그립바 1세(Marcus Julius Agrippa I)에 관한 다양한 역사 기록을 토대로 그리스도교 형성 당시의 유대와 로마 관계의 단면을 드러내고 신약성서 배경사 이해를 위한 역사 정보를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 아그립바 1세는 사도시대의 정치 환경을 형성한 주요 인물들 중 하나로서 신약성서와 원시그리스도교 연구에 중요함에도, 그에 관한 선행연구는 슈바르츠(Daniel R. Schwartz)의 단행본(1990)을 제외하면 특정 주제 및 일부 기간 연구에 그치거나 보편적 이야기식 서술에 머물렀다. 더구나 사도행전은 아그립바 1세를 “헤롯(왕)”이라 상징적으로 소개하고 간략히 다루므로 당시 시대 정황 파악을 위하여 그에 관한 개별 정리가 절실했다. 이에 이 논문은 아그립바 1세에 관한 행로와 사적(事績) 정리를 시도하되, 신약성서 및 유세비우스 등 그리스도교계 문헌 뿐 아니라 그를 보다 긍정적으로 평가한 요세푸스와 알렉산드리아의 필로 등 유대계 기록들과, 타키투스, 수에토니우스, 디오 카시우스 등의 비-유대계 문헌들을 참조하여 다양한 시각을 소개하고자 하였다. 아그립바 1세에 대한 사가들의 평가는 일치하지 않으나, 분명한 것은 당시 그를 포함한 유대 지도자들이 로마의 피지배자에 머물지 않고, 로마의 정치 상황을 적극 활용하여 자신과 민족의 유익을 추구했다는 것이다. |

This paper explores the Jewish-Roman relations reflected in the life of Marcus Julius Agrippa I who appears in Acts 12 as “Herod the king” in order to provide a historical information applicable to the studies of the apostolic age and the New Testament background. Although Agrippa I was one of the Jewish leaders who were most influential to the formation of Jewish and Roman political environments in early Christianity, previous studies have insufficiently discussed this topic. Daniel R. Schwartz’s work (1990) is the only contemporary monography on Agrippa I, and the other previous studies on the king are limited to a specific issue or period of his life. Therefore, this paper resumes discussions on Agrippa I and attempts to provide a balanced view of his life and role both in Rome and Judaea. For this purpose, the paper uses not only Hellenistic Jewish and/or early Christian sources, such as the New Testament, the works of Josephus and Philo of Alexandria, and Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History, but also non-Semitic sources, such as Tacitus’ Annals and Histories, Suetonius’ Lives of the Cesars, and Dio Cassius’ Roman History. These sources’ viewpoints of Agrippa I are slightly different from one another, but they obviously indicate that the king was not only unilaterally dominated by Rome, but he actively exploited the political situation of Rome to achieve his goals and to pursue the interests of his nation. |
