국문 초록 이 논문은 조지 엘리엇이 『사일러스 마너』를 중심으로 엘리엇의 종교적 사유와 신앙관을 재조명하고, 그녀의 교회 비판이 지닌 신학적 함의를 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 연구가 엘리엇을 무신론자나 인본주의적 종교 옹호자로 규정해온 데 반해, 본 논문은 엘리엇의 작품에 나타난 종교적 서사가 단순한 창작의 장치가 아니라, 신앙의 본질과 교회의 역할에 대한 진지한 사유의 결과임을 밝힌다. 『사일러스 마너』에 등장하는 랜턴 야드 교회는 집단에서 형성된 종교적 감정과 체험주의에 몰입하여 성경의 본뜻을 잃은 공동체로 그려진다. 엘리엇은 이러한 교회의 몰락을 통해 종교적 감정이 신앙의 중심이 될 때 나타나는 위험, 즉, 진리를 분별하지 못하고 개인적이고 주관적인 확신을 기독교에 관한 사실로 착각하는 현상을 드러낸다. 엘리엇은 신앙의 성숙은 초월적 체험이 아니라, 성경의 언어를 이성적으로 탐구하고 도덕적 성찰을 통해 신의 뜻을 이해하는 데서 비롯된다고 보았다. 엘리엇의 교회 비판은 반기독교적 사상에서 나온 것이 아니라, 종교 집단이 텍스트에 기록된 지식을 탐구하는 대신 종교적인 감정에 함몰되며 신비주의적인 체험을 맹신하는 공동체의 분위기에 반대하는 태도에서 나온다. 즉, 소설에 재현된 엘리엇의 교회 비판은 반기독교적 사상이 아니라, 지적 탐구와 비판적 사고를 통해 기독교의 본질을 알고자 하는 지적인 열망에서 나온다. 본 논문에서는 『사일러스 마너』를 통하여 엘리엇이 보여주는 ‘무지한 교회’의 문제점을 분석하고, 어떠한 맥락에서 작가가 ‘지적인’ 신앙 공동체의 필요성을 강조했는지를 밝힌다.
영문 초록 This study examines George Eliot’s religious understanding of faith through a close analysis of Silas Marner (1861), and explores the theological implications embedded in her critique of the church. Whereas previous scholarship has often characterized Eliot as an atheist or as a proponent of humanistic religion, this paper argues that the religious narratives in her works reveal the nature of faith and the role of the church. The Lantern Yard church in Silas Marner is portrayed as a community that distort the core meaning of Scripture by indulging in religious emotions and ignoring the importance of intellectual inquiry. Eliot’s critique of the church does not originate from anti-Christian sentiment but from her opposition to religious communities that prioritize emotional fervor and mystical experience over knowledge and critical thinking. This paper analyzes the problems inherent in the “ignorant church” and elucidates Eliot’s Christian worldview as sustained during the period in which she wrote the novel.
