This study examines five paradigm shifts that have shaped the modern humanities since the twentieth century—the linguistic, critical, discursive, semiotic, and postmodern turns—and reconstructs them from a Christian worldview. Its object of analysis is not the texts of individual thinkers but the reception through which their concepts were institutionalized across the human and social sciences. These turns do not occupy a single disciplinary level; the "genealogy" offered here is therefore not a narrative of historical succession but an ideal-typical reconstruction of one logical move that recurs across otherwise unrelated points of departure. Evidence for that reception is drawn from the texts in which the theorists themselves had to repudiate the radicalized readings imposed on them. Acknowledging these turns as "common grace" for revealing language as an epistemic condition and a site of social power, the study criticizes the point at which a partial insight is expanded into a total account of language. To identify that point, it proposes four criteria: universalization, level-crossing, self-referential consistency, and principled exclusion. Building on these criteria, it distinguishes epistemological constructivism, which claims that access to reality is socially mediated, from ontological constructivism, which claims that reality is discursively produced. Only the latter is subject to critique; the postmodern turn is accordingly treated not as the sum of divergent thinkers' positions but as a common reception in which language came to occupy the place of reality. What the analysis finds in each turn is not the claims of individual theorists but the repeated collapse, in reception, of the limits those theorists themselves set. In response, the study proposes a Logos-centered Christian linguistics grounded in creation and incarnation—not a rival to descriptive linguistic subfields but a metatheoretical level of reflection on the presuppositions and ends of language study, one that relocates the analytic gains of these turns under the light of the Logos and directs critique toward restoration rather than dissolution. Language is a stewardship gift rather than a human construct, and is to be recovered as a gracious medium for reconciliation and shalom. |
