This study explores the theological and ontological foundations of accounting transparency and accountability from the perspective of Coram Deo, complementing the institutional and economic approaches prevalent in contemporary accounting research. Traditional accounting literature explains accounting transparency primarily through information asymmetry, agency problems, corporate governance, external auditing, and internal controls. While these approaches contribute significantly to capital market efficiency and investor protection, they provide a limited explanation of the normative and ontological question of why individuals responsible for accounting information should ultimately act with integrity and accountability.
To address this limitation, this study reinterprets Coram Deo, Coram Meo, and Coram Mundo as complementary dimensions of accountability. Coram Deo represents ultimate ontological accountability before God, Coram Meo represents internal accountability grounded in conscience and professional ethics, and Coram Mundo represents social and institutional accountability to stakeholders and the broader community. While recognizing the theological priority of Coram Deo, the study conceptualizes these dimensions as a complementary structure of ultimate foundation–internalization–institutionalization. Given human sinfulness and moral fallibility, institutional mechanisms such as internal controls, external auditing, and corporate governance do not compete with Coram Deo but serve as essential means of supporting and implementing accountability within human organizations.
The study further examines the Wirecard, Luckin Coffee, and Osstem Implant cases and interprets their ethical and institutional failures normatively through the lens of Coram Deo. It does not claim an empirical causal relationship between accounting fraud and the absence of Coram Deo; rather, it proposes a theological framework for understanding accounting fraud in terms of integrity and ultimate accountability. Accordingly, Coram Deo does not replace institutional controls but provides the ultimate normative foundation that gives direction and meaning to professional integrity, internal controls, auditing, and corporate governance. This framework contributes to a Christian understanding of accounting accountability and offers practical implications for accounting ethics education and organizational accountability.
