| 영문 초록 | This study explored the school experiences of adolescents with North Korean backgrounds and examined how these experiences shaped their understanding of and adaptation to South Korean society from the perspective of transculturalism. The participants were five adolescents from North Korean backgrounds in their late teens and early twenties who had attended schools in both North and South Korea. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews and analyzed using a qualitative case study approach. The findings revealed four overarching categories and fourteen subcategories of school experiences, including recognizing the differences between education aimed at individual development and education oriented toward maintaining the political system; understanding the role of South Korean schools in facilitating social integration and upward mobility; experiencing challenges in school adjustment resulting from differences in educational and career guidance systems between North and South Korea; and developing pragmatic academic and career strategies. Through these school experiences, the participants came to understand the values and norms of South Korean society while reconstructing their identities by integrating their existing cultural experiences with new cultural elements. From the perspective of Christian anthropology, this process reflects the inherent dignity and relational nature of human beings, suggesting that the experiences of adolescents with North Korean backgrounds can be understood not merely as a process of adaptation but also as a journey of meaning-making and identity formation. This study offers practical implications for supporting the school adjustment of adolescents with North Korean backgrounds and underscores the need for an integrated, human-centered approach. |
