This study examines the elementary social studies unit Law and Human Rights and reconstructs a key lesson on developing human-rights-friendly attitudes from a Christian perspective. Two elementary social studies textbooks based on the 2022 revised national curriculum were analyzed, with the teacher’s guide published by Visang Education used as a supplementary source. The analysis found that the textbooks and teacher’s guide present being human itself and the universal possession of rights from birth as normative starting points for human rights, and connect these ideas to respect for the rights of others and self-reflection. However, they do not treat the philosophical or religious grounding of why being human itself entails equal dignity and rights as a separate object of inquiry. Within the context of Christian schooling, this study therefore interprets human dignity through the theological understanding of the imago Dei and reconstructs the key lesson using the three facets of What If Learning—seeing anew, choosing engagement, and reshaping practice. The redesigned lesson incorporates gradual slow looking through a picture book, a structured listening process of speaking–listening–restating–confirming, intentional waiting time and formative assessment, follow-up activities that connect personal kindness with the language of rights, and a closing movement of commitment and blessing. The key activities were preliminarily implemented in an actual fifth-grade classroom to examine their feasibility and procedural clarity; however, no empirical claim is made regarding changes in students’ understanding of human dignity or their attitudes toward human rights. The study suggests that Christian curriculum reconstruction need not be limited to adding theological content to existing subject matter, but can also involve redesigning the pedagogical forms through which students see, listen, wait, and participate in light of a Christian vision of human dignity. |
