영문 초록 In this paper I analyze the process of development of John Hick's idea of religious pluralism, and draw out several characteristics of Hick's philosophy of religion, and finally describe Hick's christianity that is fundamentally different from the traditional Christianity.
In the analysis of the development of Hick's pluralism, I emphasized the point that in spite of the general consensus that there are changes from christo-centric to God-centric model(1973ff.), and from God-centric to salvation-centric model(1980s) in the thought of John Hick, there is no fundamental change in Hick's thought since 1973 when he first demanded us the corpernican revolution in our philosophy of religion.
The ultimate cause of Hick's idea of pluralism lies in his acceptance of Kantian epistemology that he used in his own way. As a result of that he has a kind of ethical reductionism in his philosophy of religion, and he denied the idea of propositional truth. And he usually uses arguments based on probability.
It is myth that he tries to be fair to every religions in the world. For he distorts every religion from his own perspective of religious pluralism. I showed this is the case by making it clear that for him Christianity is not the same as what Christians used to believe so far. For example, (1)for Hick, Jesus is not and could not the God-man. The idea of the God-man is, for Hick, a self-contradictory concept. So for Hick, Jesus is a divine being merely in the metaphorical sense of the word, at the best. Hence (2)there is no Trinity for Hick. His idea of God does not even approach to modalistic understanding of the divine trinity. As a natural consequence, (3)Hick's idea of salvation is quite different from the traditional understanding of salvation is quite different from the traditional understanding of salvation. For Hick there is no need of the atonement. Hence women's liberation movement is also regarded by Hick as standing at the frontier of the salvific changes in the world. Finally, (4)there is also a change of one's concept of mission. It is nonsense to persuade people who has other religions to change their religions. For Hick, for all religious people the process of salvation/ enlightenment/ liberation has already begun.
Through this discussion that exposes Hick's ultimate motive of developing the theology of religious pluralism we might be confronted with an fundamental either/or: Hick's enlightened christianity or biblical Christianity?
