| 국문 초록 | 본 논문의 목적은 밀턴(John Milton)이 자신의 장편 서사시 󰡔실낙원󰡕(Paradise Lost)에서 하나님의 정당함을 어떻게 옹호하고 있는 가를 살펴보는 데 있다. 아버지의 영향으로 가정과 학교에서 기독교 전통의 교육을 받은 밀턴은 기독교적 세계관을 가지게 되었고 이를 자신의 작가 인생 전부를 통해 작품 속에서 보여주고 있다. 밀턴은 예수 그리스도를 통한 인간의 회복은 인간에 대한 하나님의 방법이 정당하며 하나님의 “영원한 섭리”가 궁극적으로 인간으로 하여금 하나님의 말씀에 온전히 순종하도록 하여 영원한 낙원으로의 인도에 있음을 󰡔실낙원󰡕에서 보여주고 있다. 본 논문은 󰡔실낙원󰡕에 대한 주요 관심을 인간의 타락만이 아닌 타락 후의 회복까지 연결시켜 고찰함으로 하나님의 “영원한 섭리”를 입증하고자했던 밀턴의 의도를 파악하려고 한다. 또한 󰡔실낙원󰡕에 나타난 인간 회복에 대한 지금까지의 연구가 대부분 아담과 이브의 타락과 회복의 과정에 중심을 두고 다루어진 것에 비해 본 논문은 미카엘의 비전에서 보여 준 전 인류의 회복에 초점을 맞춤으로써 유한한 존재로서 인간이 가지는 죽음과 영생에 대한 본질적 의문에 진지한 해명을 추구하고 있는 󰡔실낙원󰡕의 보편적 가치를 드러내고자 한다. |
| 영문 초록 | The Bible plays an important role in fostering the spirit and the character, the climate of religious opinion, which shapes Milton''s life and attains full poetic flowering in Paradise Lost. The purpose of this article is to illuminate Milton''s opinion on the right ways of God to man. In the beginning of Paradise Lost, Milton makes clear that he intend to sing both the restoration of man by one greater man and recovery of the lost paradise to justify the way of God to men. Milton does not seem to distinguish the world before the Fall from the ideal society to be restored at the end. His apocalyptic vision is therefore a poetic attempt to fulfill God''s ultimate plan or to "justify the ways of God to men" by connecting the first and the last, so that we can see a return to Paradise that is lost forever with the Fall of Adam and Eve. Since the fall of Adam, all mankind has proceeded to evil ways and made sins against God. Milton indicates that the way of restoration of man arises from the grace of God, who means to deliver man out of the fallen state through His only Son, Christ. To all who believe in Christ''s redemption, God proclaims the release from sin and death. On the “Salvation” of man, Milton puts the emphasis on the unmerited grace of God, while on the “sin”, he stresses it depends on the man''s freedom of the will. Paradise Lost Book XI and XII deal with the evolution of Adam''s consciousness, so this section become a study of Adam''s development from his first despair at the thought of death, through a succession of hopes and fears, to a comprehension of the final victory of good over evil and final understanding of God''s purpose and reconciliation with God''s Will, Providence. Milton concludes his poem with a relatively straightforward summary, first through vision and then through Michael''s narrative, of the history of Adam''s heirs from the Fall to the coming of Christ and beyond. |
