고대로부터 시작된 전쟁에 대한 기독교 성찰은 평화주의와 정당한 전쟁론으로 나뉘어 지금까지도 지속되고 있다. 두 관점 모두 전쟁을 막고 평화를 가져온다는 목적을 갖고 있지만, 성경 해석의 차이로 인하여 다른 실천 방법을 제시한다. 반면 현재 국제정치의 지배적인 패러다임으로 군림하고 있는 신현실주의는 국가의 이익을 앞세워 전쟁을 정치의 연속으로 간주한다. 전쟁이라는 현실의 문제를 기독교 신앙을 기반으로 고찰하기 위해서 본 논문은 정전론에 주목한다. 모든 종류의 전쟁에 반대하는 평화주의와 윤리·도덕적 고려를 배제하는 신현실주의와는 달리 정전론은 침략에 대항해서 싸우는 자기 방어의 정당성을 보편적인 규범이자 평화를 회복하는 행위로 간주하고, 침략에 따른 책임을 묻는 것을 정의를 세우는 일로 해석하기 때문이다. 정전론은 전쟁 수행의 정당성과 전쟁 개시의 정당성 두 분야로 구분하여 원칙을 제시하므로 부당한 전쟁을 고발하고 정당한 전쟁의 전통을 발전시켜 왔다. 그러나 각각의 원칙에 적지 않은 문제가 제기되고 있고, 선제공격, 예방전쟁과 같이 연계된 주제도 논란의 대상이다. 그럼에도 정전론의 필요성과 정당성을 재검토하고 정전론이 제시하는 원칙과 규범을 심도 있게 고찰하여 활용한다면 전쟁과 평화를 위한 정책 결정에 준거를 마련할 수 있다. 이러한 노력은 기독 국제정치학자의 책무이기도 하다.

From the Christian perspectives, there has been two traditions to exam the war - pacifism and just war. Both of traditions have same purposes in preventing war and bringing peace to the world. However, since they interpret the Bible differently, their suggestions to implement the peace in the world are different. On the other hand, neorealism - de facto dominating paradigm of the discipline of International Politics - has totally ignored any kinds of moral or ethical consideration on war and regarded war as one of policy alternatives that nation’s leader can choose to maximize its national interest. This article focuses on just war tradition because unlike pacifism which opposes any wars, it argues that a nation can exercise her self-defense against attacker, and even a way to restore peace and justice. Just war tradition has developed into two categories, justice of war and justice in war, both has articulated specific principles and standards to differentiate just and unjust wars. However, there are still controversies over the just war principles and also there are several just war related contentious issues such as preemptive strike and preventive war. Nevertheless, if just war tradition has continued to develop and elaborate further, it can give valuable reference when making policy for peace.
