흔히 빈센트 반 고흐의 미술은 기독교와 무관한 것으로 평가된다. 그 이유는 두 가지다. 첫째, 고흐는 성경 이야기 그림을 세 점밖에 남기지 않았다. 둘째, 고흐는 목사의 꿈을 접고 화가가 된 뒤 기독교를 버렸기 때문에 그의 그림에 기독교적 의미를 부여할 게 없다고 한다. 이러한 인식은 보편적인 반면에 피상적이다. 성화를 그려야만 기독교 화가인 것은 아니다. 종교개혁 후 칼빈주의의 영향으로 기독교 미술의 초점은 ‘예배에서 일상의 기쁨으로’ 전환되었기 때문에 종교화를 그려야만 기독교 미술가인 것은 아니다. 고흐가 현실 제도로서의 교회에서 멀어진 것은 사실이지만 그가 동생 테오와 주고받은 편지를 보면 그의 예술의 바탕은 기독교이다. 헨리 나우웬은 고흐의 영성을 ‘상처받은 치유자’의 영성으로 해석한다. 고흐가 자신의 그림에서 최고의 탁월성을 추구하여 비록 사후이긴 하지만 그것을 인정받고 있는 것도 그가 하나님에게서 받은 소명에 입각한 것으로 볼 수 있다. |

The Art of Vincent van Gogh is usually regarded as not related to Christianity. There has been two reasons: first, Gogh draw only three pieces of religious paintings among his 900 ones; second, it is said that his paintings have no implications for Christianity because he departed from God after he gave up his dream of being a pastor to become a painter. However, there is no ground for those arguments. All Christian artists should not necessarily draw religious paintings. With the influence of Calvinism since the Reformation, hristian artists focused on the daily joy rather than the godly worship. Even though Gogh drifted apart from the church as an institution, his paintings had still been based on Christianity as is clear in his numerous letters to Theo, his brother. Those letters are full of his meditations on many Bible verses, his thoughts about Christian faith, and his outlook on God and nature. Henry Nouwen said that the spirituality of Gogh was that of ‘a wounded healer.’ We can also say that Gogh faithfully pursued his calling from God as a painter to be one of the most excellent artists throughout the history. |
