윌리엄 블레이크(William Blake, 1757-1827)는 뛰어난 상상력과 시대를 앞선 통찰력으로 기독교적 인식을 확장한 초기 낭만주의 시인이다. 당시의 영국은 명예혁명을 지나 민주주의의 초석을 다지는 상황에 있었고 산업혁명으로 인한 기계발달은 소규모 생산 체제를 대량생산으로, 농경사회에서 산업사회로의 전환을 가져왔다. 산업혁명은 자본주의를 가능케 하였으며 자본주의 사회는경제적 부와 획기적인 편리함을 가져다주었다. 하지만 전통적인 삶의 형태를 근본적으로 해체하였고 실업과 빈부격차 등으로 사회적 혼란의 요인이 된다. 산업혁명의 산물인 물질만능주의는 도구로서만 가치를 인정받게 되는 인간성의 상실을 불러오고 인간의 존엄성과 삶의 의미는 저변으로 소실되었다. 블레이크는 이러한 사회의 혼란과 변화에 초점을 맞추고 이를 통찰력 있는 시선으로 바라보았다. 블레이크는 『순수의 노래』(Songs of Innocence)에서 어린이의 순수한 눈으로 세상을 바라보며 순진무구한 영혼의 세계를 노래한다. 『순수의 노래』의 시들은 주로 밝은 분위기가 주를 이룬다. 『경험의 노래』(Songs of Experience)에서 블레이크는 그가 속한서 타락한 사회의 모습을 그대로 보여주고 그 속에서 가난과 타락으로 고통 받는 인간들과 이곳에서 희망을 찾고자하는 시인의 자신 의지를 노래한다. 그러므로 순수와 경험을 분리하여 이해해서는 안 되며 두 상태는 변증법적 작용에 의해 서로 순환하며 합일된 세계를 추구한다고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 블레이크의 『순수와 경험의 노래』(Songs of Innocence and of Experience)를 중심으로 그의 작품에 나타난 당시 사회의 문제인 아동노동, 종교타락을 시 안에서 살펴보고 타락한 사회의 양상에 대한 시인의 기독교적인 구원모색을 살펴보고자 한다. |

William Blake is an early romantic poet in the 18th century. In the eighteen century of England is called industrial revolution because the system of production and division of labor allowed for the mass production of goods. The eighteen century of England went through sudden social upheaval and great confusion through the influence of the Industrial revolution and the English Revolution. The wealth disparity has widened along with industrial development. The poor children grew up in the darkness of ignorance and poverty. The society were experiencing a urban child poverty problem. The child labor is rooted in poverty, but it is compounded of government neglect. The circle of poverty was due to the corrupt priest and religion dismal poverty. Blake saw the united world through contrastive vision in Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Blake focused on the negative aspects of society in the vortex of revolutions. He criticized them in his poems with a keen observation and would like to suggest the solution for social recovery and human release. Break want to find a way to solve this problem. He believed that the God is the savior for all people and of all sins. This thesis attempts to analyze the social criticism classified by themes and redemptive voice for Utopia centering around Songs of Innocence and of Experience. |
