본고는 이슬람 선교에 평생을 바친 즈웨머의 생애와 그의 사역을 목회상담적 관점에서 평가해 보려는 시도에서 출발했다. 즈웨머는 후원금을 모아 아라비아로 갈만큼 초기부터 이슬람 선교에 대한 확고한 방향을 가진 선교사였다. 그의 무슬림 선교는 열병과 재정부족, 사랑하는 사람들의 죽음 등 선교를 포기할 수밖에 없는 많은 시련이 있었다. 그러나 그는 결코 이슬람 선교를 포기하지 않았다. 하지만 26년의 전반기 선교사역에도 불구하고 실제적 열매는 쉽게 얻어지지 않았다. 이로 인해 그는 이슬람 선교에 대한 전략을 수정할 수밖에 없었다. 그것은 초기 대결적이고 대립적인 선교방식에서 보다 인류학적이고 그리스도 중심적인 접근법을 취했는데, 그리스도의 사랑과 십자가의 사랑, 우정과 우애의 선교방식으로 드러났다. 그의 변화된 선교 패러다임의 구체적인 모습은 오늘날 보기에 목회상담학적인 관점을 가진 선교방식 혹은 전략으로 보인다. 목회상담학적 선교방식이란 복음의 일방적이고 선포적인 방법이 아닌, 상호 관계성 가운데 호혜적이고 양방향성의 소통을 추구하는 전략이다. 그것은 목회상담학에서 중요시되는 공감과 경청, 이야기 해석학, 치료적 동맹관계 등과 같은 방식들과 유사한 것이다. 이는 무슬림을 비롯한 타문화권에 있는 사람들에 대한 선교와 공존을 위한 다양한 교류에 필요한 건설적인 접근방식과 이해를 제공해 준다. 즈웨머의 변화된 무슬림 선교방식은 오늘날 목회상담적 요소를 가진 선교였다는 점에서 새롭게 평가받아야 하고, 종교적 혹은 정치적 갈등 가운데 있는 사람들이 동반자적인 삶을 살아가기 위한 대안으로서 목회상담적 선교의 새로운 방법론을 개발하는 데 유용한 자료가 될 것으로 기대된다. |

The purpose of this study was to explore Zwemer's devotion in an attempt to evaluate to the Islamic missionary and his pastoral counseling method. In the late 19th century, Zwemer had collected donations by himself and then he went to Arabia for the Islamic missionary. His Muslim missionary had many trials such as fever, lack of finances, and the death of loved ones. But he did not give up the Islamic missionary. During 26 years of his mission, although it did not bear much fruit for the salvation of souls. So, he had no choice to change his strategy. It was used as a way of Christ-centered and Anthropological rather than confrontational and conflicting way of mission from the beginning. It was shown by the way of mission as the love of Christ and the cross, friendship and companionship. His detailed and changed mission paradigm form, seems to be strategy or the way of mission that have a perspective of pastoral counseling in today. The method of his missionary approach is evaluated as much to contribute to future missions counseling or pastoral counseling. He knew that the mission through such public preachment or forum on the street caused resentment and resistance from the Muslims. Thus, he used a Christ-centered approach such as the cross of Christ in love and friendship, and struggled to build relationship with intellectuals. This method is similar to the pastoral counseling approaches such as empathy, listening courteously, narrative analysis and therapeutic alliance. Therefore, Zwemer's Muslim missionary method should receive a new assessment in that it was a mission with a pastoral counseling element, and it is expected to become a useful material in order to develop a new methodology of pastoral counseling mission as an alternative way to live as a partner for people who are living in the conflict of religious or political. |
