본 논문은 이탈리아 작가 카를로 콜로디(Carlo Collodi)가 쓴 동화 『피노키오의 모험』(Le avventure di Pinocchio 1883)을 기독교의 구속사의 관점에서 다시 읽어보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 세대와 지역을 아우르는 한 편의 고전으로서의 이 작품은 일반적으로 이탈리아의 통일 직후 혼란스럽고 암울했던 사회적 환경을 배경으로 하여, 국가의 질서 회복을 위한 교육과 훈육의 중요성에 대한 강조와 어린이 개인의 자유의 추구가 끊임없이 충돌하면서 한 개인의 성장 과정을 생동감 있게 묘사하고 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 구속사의 관점으로 읽었을 때, 이 작품은 한 편으로는 하나의 단순한 질료의 상태에서 자신을 창조한 아버지 제페트와의 약속을 지켜가는 과정에서 다양한 유혹과 위험을 헤쳐 가는 피노키오의 ‘천로역정’이며, 다른 한 편으로는 집을 나간 탕자를 기다리던 아버지의 심정으로 끝까지 피노키오의 여정을 기다려 오다가 끝내는 상어에게 삼켜지는 죽음의 위기를 피노키오와 함께 겪은 후, 그가 진정한 ‘인간 소년’이 될 때까지 그를 기다려 준 제페토 할아버지의 ‘언약’에 대한 이야기로 해석할 수 있다. 따라서 이 작품은 하나님께서 친히 인간의 몸을 입고 이 땅에 오셔서 십자가에 죽으신 후 부활하심으로 당신의 피조물들에게 진정한 생명인 영생을 주시기 위한 언약을 성취하신 ‘하나님의 구속사’의 축소판으로 해석할 수 있다. |

This study aims to re-read The Adventures of Pinocchio, written by an Italian writer Carlo Collodi from the perspective of the history of redemption in Christianity. This book as a piece of classical masterpiece enjoyed by people all over the world for generations vividly depicts a boy’s initiation process, in which the emphasis on education and training for the recovery of national order during the era of turbulence right after the Resorgimento (unification) in Italy ceaselessly clashes with the protagonist’s quest of an individual liberty. However, read from the perspective of the history of redemption, this book, based on the covenant between Geppetto, the father and creator, and Pinocchio, the creature, can be regarded as the Pilgrim’s Progress of Pinocchio, in which a puppet created from a single material of a log pursues its goal to be a real human boy trying to fulfill the covenant by going through a variety of temptations and perils. On the other hand, this story might be interpreted as a story of limitless love and waiting by Geppetto, who has been waiting until Pinocchio’s journey ends and the puppet becomes a proper boy as the father of the prodigal son did in the Bible, after experiencing death in the stomach of a big shark. This book therefore can be interpreted as a miniature of God’s history of redemption, through which God himself came to this world in a human body to fulfill his covenant through his death on the cross and resurrection for the eternal/real life of his human creature. |
