본 연구는 영국 소설가 지넷 윈터슨(Jeanette Winterson)의 첫 소설『오렌지만이 과일은 아니다』(Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit) 속의 포스트모던 소설의 주요 특징과 교회의 상황을 확인하고, 포스트 시대 속에서 교회가 지향해야 할 역할을 모색해 보고자 한다. 포스트모더니즘에 대한 기독교적 시각의 비판과 대응의 근거로서는 ‘그리스도의 탁월성(The Supremacy of Christ)’을 주창한 보디 보챔(Vauddie Baucham)의 논지를 활용한다. 구약성경의 첫 여덟 권의 제목이 붙어 있는 이 작품에는 성경의 내용이 작가의 삶의 궤적에 따라 패러디되면서 폐쇄적인 기독교 사회의 억압적인 면모를 조롱하고 있다. 또한, 전설이나 동화 등이 삽입되어 작품의 함축성과 상징성을 극대화함으로써, ‘포스트모던 소설’의 서사 기법을 적극적으로 구현한다. 화자는 교회와 목사, 그리고 열성 신자인 자기 어머니를 폭력적이고 억압적인 ‘광신자’로 매도하며 조롱하고, 작품의 말미에서는 그 어머니의 표현의 변화를 근거로 레즈비언인 자신의 정체성을 정당화하고 있다. 그러나 그 어머니는 진리에 대한 변함없는 확신과 열린 마음을 바탕으로 예배와 선교와 그리고 봉사활동에 헌신하고 있으며, 그러한 그녀의 신앙과 봉사의 정신 속에서 ‘교회 같은 어머니’가 확인되었고, 포스트 시대에 신앙과 성도를 지켜 내고 세상을 구원할 수 있는 ‘어머니 같은 교회’가 바로 그 어머니 속에 구현되어 있다. |

This study aims to analyze Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit to identify some features of ‘postmodern novels’ and the present situation of today's churches depicted in it, seeking the future roles for the church to play in the era of ‘Postism.’ As the theoretical basis for the Christian criticism and response to postmodernism, this study consults the thesis of Vauddie Baucham Jr., who advocated "The Supremacy of Christ." The novel, which features the theme of lesbianism, is divided into eight parts in total, each titled as the first eight volumes of the Old Testament respectively. The contents parody the Old Testament to the trajectory of Winterson's own life, ridiculing an exclusive Christian society deeply rooted in a small community. In addition, the novel implements the narrative technique of "the postmodern novel" to maximize the connotation and symbolism by inserting legends and fairy tales in it. The main speaker keeps her postmodern life in her community, criticizing the church, the minister and her mother, who is faithful to the principles of the church. Later, the narrator tries to persuade the readers to understand her identity as a lesbian girl on the basis of her mother’s changes in expression. However, Jeanette's mother, who is sincerely dedicated to worship, missionary work, and service activities identifies with a "church-like mother," who has endured and overcome the age of chaos, and, in whom the image of a "mother-like church", full of grace, truth and love, being able to preserve its members and save the world is well-embodied. |
