| 국문 초록 | 이 논문에서 필자는 공적 정치적 영역에서 이루어지는 기독교인의 정치적 사랑의 삶을 탐구할 것이다. 서구와 한국 기독교의 정치적 사랑을 추적하고, 사랑이 정치적 폭력을 어떻게 바라보느냐에 초점을 맞추어 이 둘 사이의 만남의 자리를 마련하고자 한다. 필자의 탐구에서 주된 작업은 각각의 정치적 사랑 이론을 정립하는데 필요한 신학적 근거들을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 서구 신학자들, 곧 어거스틴, 라인홀드 니버, 그리고 존 하워드 요더의 신학 사상과 1960년대와 1970년대를 중심으로 한 한국 교회의 역사와 그 신학적 배경을 다룰 것이다. 기독교 정치적 사랑은 역사를 주관하시는 하나님의 주권을 존중하면서, 자신의 권력을 절대화하고 영속화하려는 정치 체제의 시도에 저항하고자 한다. 기독교 정치적 사랑은 하나님의 섭리적 사랑을 존중하면서 정치적 강제력의 정당한 사용을 허용할 여지를 마련하는데, 무고한 이웃들을 보호하기 위해 군사력을 사용하는 것을 그 예로 들 수 있다. 기독교 정치적 사랑은 인간의 죄성과 유한함을 인정하면서, 순진한 낙관주의와 극단적인 패배주의라는 이 두 가지 위험에 빠지지 않게 한다. |
| 영문 초록 | This article explores a theological concept of ‘political love’ (which binds the Christian’s moral choices and actions in the public, political realm) and applies this framework to the case of Korea. By cross-fertilizing Western theological perspectives and Korean Christian perspectives on political love, I aim towards a more complete understanding of Christian love’s political relevance, with special attention to love’s view of political violence. Given the goal of ‘cross-fertilization,’ I constructively propose a ‘political love’ framework that guides Christian social engagement. My methodology critically engages John Howard Yoder’s pacifist version of political love vis-à-vis Augustine’s and Reinhold Niebuhr’s accounts of political love. The second part of the article describes a Korean Christian version of ‘political love,’ with particular attention to the social and political engagement of the Protestant churches in the 1960s and 1970s. My argument follows these general contours：Honoring the sovereignty of God over history, Christians are prepared to resist any political authorities which attempt to make themselves absolute and play God. Christian political love endorses a just use of political violence as a work of love – for instance, the use of military force to protect innocent neighbors. Recognizing historical exigencies and human sinfulness and finitude, political love guards itself from degenerating into either naïve optimism or excessive defeatism. |
